COPYRIGHT INFORMATION FOR DIGITAL IMAGES

The Visual Resources Collection of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Architecture Library consists of lawfully acquired and lawfully made images provided for the non-profit, educational use of UNL students, faculty, and staff and other persons granted permission to use the facilities of the University for educational purposes only. Access to the searchable catalog record in IRIS is open. Most digital images, where available/permitted, are restricted to UNL students, faculty, staff and other persons granted permission to use the facilities of the University for educational purposes. Digital images in IRIS are surrogate representations of slides housed in the Visual Resources Collection or are lawfully acquired images available in digital format only. The physical slides of Visual Resources Collection are available for loan to registered patrons of the Libraries. They are not for sale.

The Visual Resources Collection, its physical slides and its digital images are an extension of traditional library services and are provided in a manner that respects fair use rights, the rights of copyright holders, and current copyright law. The user must assume full responsibility for any use of the materials, including but not limited to, infringement of copyright and publication rights of reproduced materials. Any materials used for academic research or otherwise should be fully credited with the source.

Publication of Visual Resources Collection images in any form, such as in dissertations, theses, and web pages is not permitted without the expressed written permission of the copyright holder. Papers written or projects completed in fulfillment of class assignments are not considered publications. Full source information for images used in class assignments should be acknowledged in footnotes, captions or bibliographies.

  • The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries own the copyright to the Joseph Messana Image Collection. For information about permissions, contact the Visual Resources Specialist
  • A select few images in the collection were taken by University staff or donated to the Libraries without restrictions. These images may be used with permission of the Libraries. For information about permissions, contact the Visual Resources Specialist
  • Images or digital rights acquired from publishers and vendors represent copyrighted works and should not be downloaded or otherwise used without permission of the copyright holder, with the exception of images used in the classroom or in papers written or projects completed in fulfillment of class assignments.
  • All other digital images probably represent copyrighted works photographed from published materials under the fair use provisions of U.S. Code Title 17 and should not be downloaded or otherwise used without permission of the copyright holder, with the exception of images used in the classroom or in papers written or projects completed in fulfillment of class assignments.
