Rubies, emeralds, sapphires embellish the cross piece, inset in gold. Nephrite jade was first used in India during the time of the Mogul emperors who had access to it from their wide-spread Central Asia possessions. Gemstones have been indigenous to and used in India from early times. The combining of jade and gems reflects Persian as well as the moslem influence and design. Rubies, emeralds and sapphires, found in parts of India, when inset in gold, on the jade, produced a brilliant effect.
