The
Minakshi
Sundareshvara
Temple
, also
known
as the
Great
Temple
,
is
located
at the
center
of
Madurai
, the
capital
of a
local
governing
dynasty
,
known
as
Nayaka
, from ca.
mid-16th
ccentury
until
1739
. The
temple
mainly
assumed
its
present
form
during
the
reign
of the
powerful
Nayaka
ruler
,
Tirumalai
(r
.
1623-59)
. The
temple
complex
is
contained
within
high
enclosure
walls
with
four
large
gateways
(gopuras)
centrally
placed
on
each
side
.
Within
the
enclosure
are
two
principal
east-facing
temples
,
one
dedicated
to the
local
goddess
Minakshi
and the
other
to her
consort
Shiva
as
Sundareshvara
(Beautiful
Lord)
.
Each
temple
is
situated
within
its
own
walled
enclosure
and
entered
through
smaller
gateways
(gopuras)
.
Various
subsidiary
shrines
,
pillared
halls
(mandapas)
and
other
structures
are
situated
within
the
inner
and
outer
enclosures
. This
immense
temple
complex
is
an
important
place
of
pilgrimage
and
periodically
painted
and
reconsecrated
.
