: The
corner
of
First
and
Fremont
sign
:
flashing
interlocking
H's
form
a
concave
screen
that
sets
off
the
words
'
Horseshoe
' and '
Gambling
'
done
in an
Old
West
style
typeface
.
Along
the
side
of the
building
, '
dogleg
'
spikes
of
neon
shoot
upward
like
lightning
bolts
in
reverse
. The
architects
integrated
proposals
from
YESCO
[Young
Electric
Sign
Company]
designers
into their
final
design
.
When
the
Horseshoe
took
over
The
Mint
in
1988
, the
1962
'
doglegs
' from the
original
Horseshoe
were
repeated
all
the
way
down
the
block
. A '
modified
onion-shaped
bullnose
'
sign
at
First
and
Fremont
was
produced
by
YESCO
.
Note
the '
Glitter
Gulch
'
sign
just
down
from this
club
. In
1946
, the
Las
Vegas
Chamber
of
Commerce
gave
the
name
'
Glitter
Gulch
' to a
three
block
stretch
of
Fremont
Street
.

History
: The
Horseshoe
Club
was
established
in the
Eldorado
Club
building
by
Benny
Binion
in
1950
. He
replaced
the
existing
miner
sign
on the
corner
with a
horseshoe
and
horse
. In
1962
, by
Wayne
McAllister
and
William
Wagner
remodeled
the
old
Horseshoe
which
had
expanded
into the
space
where
the
Boulder
Club
once
stood
.
(The
Boulder
Club
burned
in
1956.)
They
fronted
the
old
Hotel
Apache
, a
three-story
brick
structure
at
Second
and
Fremont
, with a
neon
sign
,
which
became
an
icon
of
1950s
design
. To
create
the
sign
,
McAllister
and
Wagner
asked
for
proposals
from
YESCO
and
combined
several
of them in their
final
design
. In
1988
, the
Horseshoe
took
over
the
neighboring
Mint
,
enabling
it
to
dominate
the
block
.

2004
Binion's
Horseshoe
closed
due
to
bankruptcy
.
It
was
sold
to
Harrah's
Entertainment
and
MTR
Gaming
Group
and
reopened
. In
2005
MTR
Gaming
Group
assumed
complete
ownership
and
renamed
the
club
