Description
: In the
early
1980s
, the
owners
removed
the
slender
Moderne
pylon-shaped
sign
and
lined
the
roofline
with
faux
stadium
bleachers
to
complement
the
casino's
sports
theme
.
Between
1977
and
1980
, the
club
remodeled
in
three
phases
,
which
were
scheduled
to
enable
it
to
remain
open
to the
public
throughout
the
process
.

History
: The
Las
Vegas
Club
opened
in the
mid-1920s
across
the
street
from its
present
location
and was
known
as a '
working
man's
hangout.
'
It
moved
to the
current
site
in
1949
. In
1949
, the
club
erected
a
120
foot
sign
with
vertical
Moderne
lettering
designed
with
Hermon
Boernge
of
YESCO
.
Neon
coins
spilled
from a
giant
slot
machine
at its
base
. By the
early
1960s
, the
Las
Vegas
Club
had
expanded
down
the
block
,
overtaking
the
Overland
Hotel
next
door
. This
created
a
continuous
marquee
down
that
side
of the
block
. In the
early
1960s
, a
slot
machine
the
size
of a
building
was
placed
next
door
. In the
early
1980s
, they
removed
the
slender
Moderne
pylon-shaped
sign
and, in
keeping
with the
sports
theme
,
installed
a
new
sign
with a
brass
baseball
player
in the
center
.
