Project
Description
: This was the
first
highrise
along
Fremont
Street
and the
first
Fremont
casino
to
offer
amenities
like
a
pool
and
showroom
. The
original
design
was
California
Modern
. The
ground
floor
was
large
horizontal
public
spaces
,
while
the
modular
rooms
rose
as a
vertical
slab
tower
that was
faced
with
interlocking
concrete
panels
and
sunscreens
.
Pinks
and
red-browns
concrete
panels
covered
the
exterior
.
YESCO
fabricated
signage
that was
integrated
into the
architecture
. A
horizontal
sign
extended
out
from the
roof
and
individual
letter
blocks
spelled
"
Fremont
"
down
the
side
of the
building
. The
signage
has
since
been
altered
, but
it
retains
the
combination
of
vertical
letters
down
the
side
and a
tall
sign
over
the
roof
.

It
was
designed
by
Wayne
McAllister
and his
partner
William
Wagner
.
It
was
13
stories
,
cost
$6
million
, and was
financed
by
San
Francisco
hotelman
Lou
Lurie
. In
1963
a
fourteen
story
tower
was
added
,
designed
by
Zick
and
Sharp
with
Wayne
McAllister
as
consulting
architect
. In
1983
,
Sam
Boyd
purchased
the
Fremont
Hotel
.
