Description
: The
current
sign
on the
Strip
is
228
feet-tall
,
one
of the
tallest
. The
design
for this
thin
column
of
vertical
lettering
is
based
on the
1962
sign
, a
three-sided
127-foot
sign
which
now
stands
at
Paradise
Road
and
Sahara
Avenue
.
Originally
, this was a
low-rise
building
, but a
26-story
tower
was
added
in
1988
. The
pool
terrace
and
room
wings
date
from
1952
. If
you
ignore
the
highrise
backdrop
, the
pool
terrace
retains
the
scale
and
detail
of
1950s
Las
Vegas
.

: The
original
building
was
designed
by
Max
Meltzman
and
financed
by
Milton
Prell
and
Del
Webb
, a
prominent
builder
.
Essentially
a
motel
in
form
,
low
wings
spun
outward
from the
entry
. At the
entrance
was a
tall
brick
pylon
with the
name
in
horizontal
lettering
across
the
top
. The
resort
had a
North
African
Theme
. The
127-foot
tall
,
slender
sign
dating
from
1962
started
the
trend
toward
ever-bigger
signs
.
