Sponsor/Developer: Philadelphia's Office of Housing and Community Development, The Fairmount Art Association Project Description: This interior treatment of a library was constructed by the artist as a memorial to Louis Kahn. Images, drawings and quotes relating to Louis Kahn's life are represented in this work. The rooms contains artist-designed benches and a lecturer's space. A rectangular inlaid strip of contrasting wood contains the inscription from a poem by Walt Whitman. It reads: When the materials are prepared and ready, the Architects shall appear. The greatest among them shall be he Who best knows you, And encloses all and is faithful to all. He and the rest shall not forget you, they Shall perceive that you are not An iota less than they. You shall be fully glorified in them. Project History: Armajani was interested in doing a work for a school in Philadelphia which would enable him to combine his interests in social sciences, history and philosophy � in addition to architecture, design and sculpture. The Fleisher Art Memorial, which was known at its founding as the Graphic Sketch Club, appealed to Armajani because architect Louis Kahn had attended it as a student. The Fleisher Art Memorial is free and available to the public; it has attracted thousands of students and visitors throughout its illustrious history. The lecture room designed by Armajani was to serve as a gathering space, meeting room, and gallery for a changing group of Kahn's drawings.
