Notes	Sponsor/Developer: The National Park Service provided the funding for this project as part of its Bicentennial program. Project Description: This work is located in a courtyard and surrounded by renovated buildings where Franklin lived and worked. It includes a 40-foot-tall yellow steel-beam structure forming the outline of a house, several intimate gardens, benches, and informational displays. Venturi's design of Franklin's 'ghost' house was part of a larger plan to build a museum and a garden, and the historic restoration of five adjacent buildings relating to Franklin's life and work. Venturi's plan includes a 21,400-square-foot, below-ground museum upon which the tubular steel frame of the 'ghost' house is located. Black slate was used to designate general floor areas, and graystone for hearth and steps. Engravings on the floor contain fragments of conversations among the Franklin family members, obtained from Franklin's diaries. Period gardens are located around the 'ghost' house, and contain seating, a canopy, rose garden and intimate walkways. Franklin Court makes a statement about the need for historic preservation. Project History: Robert Venturi was selected to be the project architect. His assignment was to design an historic restoration and museum complex at the site of Benjamin Franklin's residence. The National Park Service wanted Venturi to 'recreate' Franklin's own house, which had been torn down in 1812. Little evidence remained on the one-half-acre site to determine what Franklin's house looked like, although it was known where the structure was located and roughly its volume. From this information Venturi created an abstract 'ghost' of Franklin's actual house using a tubular steel frame. Project Cost: $4,748,000.
