one
of
sixteen
Brahmanical-Hindu
cave-temples
(Caves
14-29)
, in a
series
of
34
major
cave-temples
, that are
centrally
situated
at the
rock-cut
site
of
Ellora
in the
western
Deccan
. The
cave-temples
extend
for
approximately
2
km
.
along
a
west-facing
embankment
of the
plateau
.
Other
groupings
at the
site
are
generally
identified
as the
Buddhist
caves
1-12
(ca
.
7th
c.)
that were
relocated
to the
southern
end
and a
group
of
Jain
caves
30-34
(ca.mid-9th
c.)
at the
far
northern
end
.
Cave
16
, also
known
as the
Kailasanatha
Temple
,
is
the
celebrated
rock-cut
temple
of
India
,
unsurpassed
in
scale
and
grandeur
. The
temple's
foundation
is
generally
attributed
to
Rashtrakuta
Krishna
I
(r
. ca.
758-73)
in
celebration
of the
dynasty's
victory
over
the
Chalukyas
of
Badami
. The
cave-temple
,
dedicated
to
Shiva
,
reflects
the
idea
of the
temple
as
cosmic
mountain
, and
specifically
as
Mt
.
Kailasa
, the
abode
of
Shiva
. The
cave
complex
includes
a
principal
monothic
temple
, a
Nandi
pavilion
flanked
by
two
freestanding
pillars
, a
gateway
(gopura)
, and
subsidiary
shrines
.
Stone
bridges
connect
the
upper
stories
of the
western
gateway
,
Nandi
pavilion
and
porch
of the
pillared
hall
of the
main
temple
.
Access
into the
main
temple
and
Nandi
pavilion
is
at the
upper-story
level
with the
lower
story
ornamented
with
large-scale
relief
panels
.
