The
Viceroy's
House
, the
residence
of the
Viceroy
of
India
(now
the
Rashtrapati
Bhavan)
was the
focal
point
of
Edwin's
Lutyens's
design
for
New
Delhi
,
which
was
inaugurated
in
1931
as the
capital
of
British
India
. The
principal
axis
,
King's
Way
(now
Raj
Path)
leads
upwards
from the
All
India
War
Memorial
(now
the
India
Gate)
in a
steep
incline
through
the
government
complex
to
culminate
at the
Viceroy's
House
that
is
flanked
at the
same
level
by the
two
Secretariats
. The
building
,
H-shaped
in
plan
and
crowned
by a
great
central
dome
,
is
monumental
in its
form
,
symmetry
and
scale
. The
east
facade
opens
onto the
Viceroy's
Court
(now
Great
Court)
,
where
the
Jaipur
Column
stands
,
while
a
Mughal-style
garden
lies
on the
west
side
. The
building
combines
predominantly
Western
classical
elements
with
some
Indian
elements
,
including
domed
pavilions
(chatris)
, and a
stupa
railing
(vedika)
motif
encircling
the
dome
.
