Notes
This
two-story
pavilion
is
located
in the
ruined
Deccan
city
of
Vijayanagara
(City
of
victory)
, the
capital
of a
Hindu-ruled
empire
that was
founded
at
Hampi
. The
city
of
Vijayanagara
remained
the
capital
for
approximately
230
years
under
three
distinct
dynasties--Sangama
,
Salava
and
Tuluva--beginning
ca.
1336
and
ending
ca.
1567
.
Situated
in the
center
of an
enclosure
in the
north-east
area
of the
royal
complex
, this
pavilion
is
variously
known
as the
Lotus
Mahal
or
Chitragni
Mahal
. There
is
little
documentation
as to its
originial
function
. The
pavilion
is
built
on a
symmetrically
arranged
stepped-plan
with
piers
supporting
cusped
arches
and
interior
vaulted
spaces
.
Nine
pyramidal
towers
with
overhanging
eaves
surmount
each
of the
bays
.
Incised
detailing
into the
plaster
walls
,
showing
various
decorative
patterns
,
is
still
preserved
around
the
arches
.
Stylistically
, the
building
exemplifies
an
Indo-Islamic
courtly
style
in its
blending
of the
architectural
traditions
of the
Bahmani
kingdom
of the
Deccan
and
southern
Indian
features
.
