Interior design of museum: Italo Rota, Piero Castiglioni and Richard Peduzzi under the direction of Gae Aulenti.] The Muse d'Orsay began life at the end of the 19th century as a super-elegant terminus for passenger rail traffic from Toulouse and Bordeaux into the heart of Paris. Like the Pont Alexandre III, the d'Orsay was a part of the awe-inspiring preparations for the Universal Exhibition of 1900. It is near the Louvre but on the opposite side of the Seine. The architect, Victor Laloux had been the winner of a major design competition; but by the time of his death, the station had lost its function due to limitations of its location. Lying unused for decades, the Gare d'Orsay would have been torn down for modern development in the early 1970s, had it not been for the furor caused by the destruction of Les Halles. Instead, it was declared a national cultural monument in preparation for its becoming a museum of 19th and early 20th century art. The much-acclaimed 1980s renovation was considered a tremendous success of carefully preserving the historic substance (architects: Bardon, Colboq & Philippon) and sensitively adapting the spaces with reserved modern interior design (architects: a team led by Gae Aulenti).
