The
Muse
d'Orsay
began
life
at the
end
of the
19th
century
as a
super-elegant
terminus
for
passenger
rail
traffic
from
Toulouse
and
Bordeaux
into the
heart
of
Paris
.
Like
the
Pont
Alexandre
III
, the
d'Orsay
was a
part
of the
awe-inspiring
preparations
for the
Universal
Exhibition
of
1900
.
It
is
near
the
Louvre
but on the
opposite
side
of the
Seine
. The
architect
,
Victor
Laloux
had been the
winner
of a
major
design
competition
; but by the
time
of his
death
, the
station
had
lost
its
function
due
to
limitations
of its
location
.
Lying
unused
for
decades
, the
Gare
d'Orsay
would have been
torn
down
for
modern
development
in the
early
1970s
, had
it
not been for the
furor
caused
by the
destruction
of
Les
Halles
.
Instead
,
it
was
declared
a
national
cultural
monument
in
preparation
for its
becoming
a
museum
of
19th
and
early
20th
century
art
. The
much-acclaimed
1980s
renovation
was
considered
a
tremendous
success
of
carefully
preserving
the
historic
substance
(architects
:
Bardon
,
Colboq
&
Philippon)
and
sensitively
adapting
the
spaces
with
