The garden was first landscaped during the Yuan Dynasty, around 1350. The material for the 'rockery' comes from nearby Lake Tai. The complex is described in a local brochure as a 'veritable labyrinth of hollow caves and spectacular shapes'. The garden was largely rebuilt between the 16th and 20th century.
