Subject Information	Mont-St-Michel grew from a humble 8C oratory to become a Benedictine monastery. Its greatest influence was during the 12 and 13C when the cult of St-Michel drew pilgrims (known as 'miquelots') from far and wide. The monastery became a renowned center of medieval learning. Construction of the Romanesque church began in 1017 on the highest point of the site. The monastery, built on three levels, was added to the church's north side in the early 13C. The Flamboyant Gothic choir was built between 1446-1521.
