This boulevard is the most famous of the twelve grand avenues radiating from the Place de l'Etoile created during the urban redevelopment of Paris in the 1850s under Napoleon III. Baron Eugène Haussmann was responsible for this substantial modernization of the city which witnessed the demolition of the crowded, unsanitary medieval quarter and the creation of an organized and well ventilated grid of streets, public squares and parks.
