The Coit tower was built in 1933 with funds left to the city by Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a San Francisco philanthropist. Built on the 284 foot (87 meter) high Telegraph Hill, the tower itself measures another 210 feet (63 meters) in height. The architect Arthur Brown designed it to be a fluted column.
