The Loggia dei Mercati was originally a piazza used for the sale of goods and fabric, and a meeting and resting place for the soldiers departing for war. From this ancient function there remains a marble disk in the center of the loggia that was also used as a whipping place for dishonest merchants. The loggia was built between 1549 and 1551 on a design of Giovanni Battista del Tasso. It is supported by eight heavy pilasters. In the niche on the side of via Calimala there is a statue of Michele Lando holding the flag of the Republic. Inside there are twenty Corinthian columns. Today it is the location of a market for arts and crafts. Source: www.english.firenze.net/groups/6/29/artI196681.html
