The urban fabric of medieval Lucca, most of which survives, includes many fine Romanesque churches facing piazzas, with bichrome or polychrome marble facades and rich sculptural decoration in the so-called Pisan-Luccan style. S Frediano (1112-1147), has a large mosaic on its facade. The family workshop of Berlinghiero is credited with an important mosaic of Christ and the Apostles on the facade of S. Frediano, Lucca, epitomizing their influence on painting in Tuscany between 1225 and 1275.
