The SALT-WORKS of Arc-et-Senans, a royal factory, was ordered by Louis XV and built between 1775 and 1779 by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux. Constructed in the form of a semicircle, it was designed to include not only the production units of salt but also the workers' living quarters. The Royal SALT-WORKS rapidly became obsolete as a result of the technical advances of the 19th century and was closed down in 1895. Listed as an historic monument in 1926, it was bought up by the Doubs department in 1927, and since then successive campaigns have restored the site. The Claude-Nicolas Ledoux Institute arose in 1973 from the will of some public and private institutions who wanted to create an international research center on the future.
