Built 1973. Project Description: Nestled among some 1500 trees, this arts complex is built of 14-inch blocks of Indiana limestone. It includes a recital hall, a 500-seat concert hall, 265-seat cinema, a 450-600-seat theater, exhibition gallery, studio, and offices and classrooms for three departments. The geometric shape of the complex encompasses eleven imposing buildings, and covers approximately six and a half acres. The vast expanses of window throughout the complex extend the greenery of the heavily treed grounds to the indoors. One interesting challenge the architects faced in designing the center was the stipulation that no trees be removed from the site. Only two of the 1500 trees did not survive. Project cost: $11.6 million. Project Location: Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT. Size: 133,042 sq. ft.
