Notes	Built 1980. Project Description: The Museum features a series of pavilions — housing auditorium, exhibit, research, classroom, service and administrative functions — grouped around a steel mesh ‘shadow’ structure which can be used for outdoor exhibits. The project was designed to take advantage of a temperate climate by putting all major circulation areas outdoors. The exhibit provides varied viewing circumstances. A low lighting-level tunnel through the exhibit has windows into the aquaria for close viewing of the fish. Lighting in this area is a combination of daylight with indirect artificial lighting. The building is located near the beach. Project cost: $2.6 million. Project History: This project was sponsored by the City of Los Angeles, Department of Recreation and Parks, and was conceived of as a learning and resource center. It received an Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects, Southern California Chapter, in 1980, and another award from the California Coastal Commission in 1981. Size: 20,000 sq. ft.
