Project Description: The vision of five thousand people living in an environmentally correct community has yet to be achieved; however, the Greco-Deco arches and spaces of the existing structures are still impressive, along with its dramatic desert setting. Soleri's hybrid design combines architecture and ecology with minimized energy consumption, raw materials and land. The desert setting for this community provides many basic challenges — including the development of a water system, waste management, and overcoming the intense climatic realities of a desert environment. The main building houses a restaurant and conference facility. Other buildings include support facilities for the community. Project in progress, cost $12 million so far. Project History: This project began in 1970 with Paolo Soleri's vision of a city of four to five thousand people and an environmentally sensitive support system. This experimental community, while not fulfilling its original time schedule, continues to plan for its future, but with a less ambitious goal. Project Location: near Mayer and Cordes Junction, Arcosanti, AZ
