Title
Hungary
Creator.Persons
Makovecz, Imre, 1935-
Description
Many
architects
sought
to
encapsulate
the
aspirations
of their
countries
in a
High-tech
pavilion
"
…
to
appear
before
the
International
community
as a
modern
efficient
country…
"
[official
literature
on the
Spanish
pavilion]
.
Some
newly
independent
Eastern
European
countries
sought
their
national
roots
, an
understandable
aim
but with
inherent
dangers
.
Hungary's
pavilion
is
a
triumphant
manifestation
of
such
a
search
. The
pavilion
draws
on the
personal
yet
pan-European
language
of
architecture
that
Makovecz
has
created
since
his
student
days
in
1956
. The
hand-crafted
timber
,
unworked
tree
trunks
,
scaly
tiles
and
sculpted
symbols
have
become
the
syntax
of his
work
. The
body
of this
structure
rises
like
a
slate-plated
armadillo
to a
hill-top
crowned
by the
7
towers
of a
country
church
. They
contain
40
bells
to
commemorate
the
Hungarian
victory
over
the
Turks
in the
Battle
of
Belgrade
in
1456
. This
pre-Columbian
defense
of the
west
is
the
theme
of the
interior
,
where
the
base
of the
towers
become
huge
faces
of
helmeted
Magyar
warriors
,
scowling
eastwards
. The
great
ribs
over
the
interior
conjure
up
the
security
of a
medieval
timber-framed
hall
. In the
lighter
western
hall
a
dead
oak
'an
ancient
symbol
of
life
',
extended
its
branches
into the
vaults
above
and its
roots
beneath
the
glass
floor
into a
white
hemisphere
