Creator.Persons
Ando, Tadao, 1941-
Description
Ando's
monumental
design
, at
60m
long
and
25m
high
one
of the
largest
wooden
buildings
in the
world
,
represented
an
elegant
fusion
of
ancient
and
modern
, and of
East
and
West
.
Five
gently
concave
bays
,
penetrated
by the
convex
entrance
bridge
, are an
expression
of
kinari
,
natural
beauty
unadorned
by
surface
embellishment
. The
11m
high
bridge
, or
Taiko-bashi
,
which
is
traditionally
associated
with the
passage
from this
world
to the
next
, here
represented
both
the
crossing
from
mundane
experience
to the
world
of the
imagination
and the
link
between
East
and
West
made
by those
who
crossed
it
.
Ando
employed
the
post
and
beams
of
traditional
Japanese
architecture
, but
used
timber
from
Canada
and
Africa
,
laminated
in a
technique
pioneered
in
France
and
Germany
to
allow
compound
posts
of
almost
any
size
to be
constructed
. The
iroko
planks
cladding
the
exterior
created
a
shuttered
,
introverted
quality
that
implied
a
dark
interior
.
However
a
roof
of
translucent
teflon
canvas
flooded
the
inner
spaces
with
natural
light
