Built 1982. Project Description: This small park is located on a triangular traffic island and combines seating areas and sculpture. The park also contains the Angell Memorial Fountain, with water flowing from the mouths of a circle of lion's heads. Above the fountain is a 60-foot shaft which was the flagpole for the old Post Office that fronted the square. The fountain was constructed in 1912. The recent addition to this square is the creature pond, which is a bronze facsimile of a real pond. It contains bronze ducks, salamanders, chipmunks, and other fauna. Inlaid in brick at the base of the pond are fifteen other bronze relief animals. The paving ends at a circle of granite benches, beyond which are shrubs and little-leaf linden trees. The outer perimeter contains long benches for sitting and relaxing. This simple, practical, and durable park has a sense of history and permanence. Sponsor/Developer: The Boston Redevelopment Agency. Project Location: Congress Street between Milk and Water Streets, Boston, MA
