Project Description: A home to a diverse assortment of plants and wild life. This reclaimed disposal site for bay dredge is one of Toronto's most popular public parks. This man-made peninsula was originally intended to serve as an outer Harbor to accommodate an expected increase in shipping. The Toronto Harbor Commissioners began construction of the spit in the late 50's. Since that time it has been the site for disposal of dredged material from the outer Harbor and surplus fill from development sites within Metropolitan Toronto. One of the most significant biophysical attributes of the park has been the colonization and succession of various plant communities. Tommy Thompson Park has become well known as an important nesting and staging area. It is a key component of the major migration corridors through the Metro Region. More than 290 bird species have been observed on site and forty-five of these breed on the spit. Sponsor/Developer: Metropolitan Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (MTRCA), Ministry of Natural Resources. Project Location: Foot of Leslie Street, Toronto, Canada
