Built 1991. Project Description: Two tree-lined pathways of remembrance include the engraved names of fallen officers on a low granite wall accented by bronze sculptures of adult lions protecting their cubs, created by sculptor Raymond Kaskey. Lush landscaping, a fountain and trellis structure provide a space for contemplation. The names of the fallen officers are displayed in random order on the Memorial's walls, with directories available to assist visitors in locating a particular name. At an annual candlelight vigil held each year in May, to coincide with National Police Week, new names of fallen officers are added to the Memorial. With each new addition, a message carved on the Memorial rings out; It is not how these officers died that made them heroes, it is how they lived. The Memorial and Visitors Center were established and are now managed by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, a private, nonprofit organization formed in 1984 for the purpose of honoring the service and sacrifice of America's police officers. Sponsor/Developer: The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Project Location: Judiciary Square. Media: landscape, granite, bronze, steel, water
