"The Chinese wooden whistle is covered with red, light blue, dark blue, black, green, rose colored beads on a white background in a gourd stitch. At the far end there is a leather and red, white, and brown dangle that is said to be added by Howard himself. Dance whistle. This whistle was given to James Howard in 1960 by Frank Dupuis, a man of Northern Iowa and Omaha descent who lived in Falls City, Nebraska. It is, of course, of Chinese origin. The beadwork was added by James Howard in 1964 using typical Omaha designs of the modern (with the Omaha) 'gourd stitch' work which came to them along with the regalia of the Peyote religion. The buckskin and feather dangles were added by Howard in 1974"
