The other figure on the plate is a sort of Flageolet and is strictly an instrument for amusement. It is generally made of red cedar, fashioned in two parts and then glued together. As it is made without mathematical knowledge or instruments of precision, the maker depending wholly upon his eye, there can be no uniform accuracy in the work, consequently the tones vary with every flageolet and there is no definite and fixed scale obtained, never-the-less there is sufficient resemblance between these crude musical instruments to make it possible to play upon them the various tunes which have been composed for these flageolets. (La Flesche 1898:16)"Pe'-he or gourd rattles. The green circle symbolizes the horizon, and the four straight lines, the four winds which stand at the four directions"(La Flesche 1898:22).
