Project Title: MacArthur Park Public Arts Program.
Sponsor/Developer: Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design.
Project Location: MacArthur Park, Los Angeles, CA.
Project Description: Four works are featured: (1) 'Pyramids', 1985, Judith Simonian. The artist developed two ceramic-tiled stepped pyramids with an underground speaking tube connecting the two elements of this artwork. (2) 'Mini Monuments', 1986, Alexis Smith. The artist designed a terrazzo bronze artwork inlaid in a sidewalk. This artwork is part of a larger project to relight existing theater and hotel signs which surround the park and to help revitalize the area. (3) 'Untitled mural', 1985, Bob Zoell. This mural is located on a pedestrian underpass wall and consists of brightly colored shapes. (4) 'Gate', 1986, R.M. Fischer. The artist designed two symbolic gates to the park. Al Nodal, Executive Director of the Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design, developed a program designed to improve the decaying MacArthur Park. Through a national competition, a number of artists were selected to develop site-sensitive artworks in the park. The extensive involvement of the artists with surrounding business and community groups produced a collection of artwork which speaks to the cultural, historic and environmental characteristics of the MacArthur Park neighborhood.
