Notes	Project Location: Oregon Historical Center, 1230 S.W. Park Ave., Portland, OR. Sponsor/Developer: Oregon Historical Society. Project Description: The artist created murals on two sides of the Sovereign Hotel, as part of a renovation to convert the lower four floors into much-needed office space. The murals depict Lewis & Clark and early settlers in the Northwest. The architecture firm of Zimmer, Gunsul, Frasca suggested that the artist, Richard Haas, could produce an effective mural to visually connect the hotel with the Washington Ellipse (main OHS entrance) below. The overall theme of the murals is the exploration and development of the Oregon Country. The west elevation depicts Lewis & Clark, their dog, Seaman, and servant, York, as well as Sacajawea. The south elevation depicts a wagon train of early settlers, an Indian village, and Captain Robert Gray. The figures are set in an architectural context of 'stonework', classic columns, bracketed balconettes, segmented arched pediments, and broken pediments. Project History: The project was sponsored by the Oregon Historical Society. The renovation of the old Sovereign Hotel, coordinated by Zimmer, Gunsul and Frasca, involved the Haas mural in the overall plan for the renovation.
