Sponsor/Developer: City of New York, private contributions Project Description: This simple, translucent green glass wall has inscribed in its surface letters from soldiers fighting in Vietnam to their friends and relatives back home. This 66-foot-long memorial avoids the usual glorification of the heroic soldier returning from battle. Rather, it presents dozens of powerful testimonials, in the form of letters, which evoke the ambiguity and confusion over the war and its purpose. The letters describe both the hope and the tragedy of the soldiers who faced many uncertainties and fears. Described by the artists as a 'collage of feelings', the memorial is a 'spoken' record of the unresolved issues presented by the war. Project History: In 1982, Mayor Koch appointed the New York Vietnam Veteran Memorial Commission. Its purpose was to select an appropriate memorial to the soldiers who lost their lives in the Vietnam War, and a living memorial to those who were having difficulty finding employment and returning back into society. About 600 proposals were submitted. The commission selected the site for the memorial, near the waterfront at 55 Water Street. From the initial proposals a number of finalists were selected. A second jury, consisting of 30 Vietnam veterans, selected the final proposal. The letters used on the memorial were also reviewed by a group of veterans.
