Project
Description
:
Constructed
as a
memorial
to
coal
miners
and the
coal
mining
industry
, this
large-scale
work
consists
of a
complex
of
structures
and
rooms
relating
to the
life
and
work
of the
miner
in the
east
Maryland
region.
The
project
also
includes
a
simulated
mine
shaft
and
lookout
tower.
'The
Infant
Miners
Room
'
consists
of a
small
coal
car
(cradle)
on
wheels
with
beautiful
painted
butterflies
that
change
into
images
of
black
lungs
on the
surrounding
walls
--
a
metaphor
of the
miners
' '
cradle
to
grave
'
involvement
in
mining.
The '
Pillar
and
Room
' was
where
coal
was
actually
extracted
, and
where
miners
experienced
the
greatest
danger.
Black
ceramic
tiles
are
arranged
in
geometric
patterns
on
floor
and
walls.
The '
Rooms
of
Memory
'
cottage
,
representing
the
miner
in
retirement
,
is
filled
with
artifacts
of
mining
including
picks
,
lamps
,
lunch
buckets
and
old
photographs
of
miners
and their
families.
'The
Rotunda
', at the
entrance
to the '
mine
shaft
',
is
a
switching
house
for the
coal
carts
, and
contains
the
six
skills
and
six
hazards
associated
with
mining
inscribed
on the
walls.
The
shaft
itself
is
a
metaphor
for the
miners
'
journey
to
death
and
beyond.
The
work
also
contains
a
watch
tower
and
coal
cart
shed
, and
tracks
which
lead
to the '
Infant
Miners
Room'.
Project
History
: The
Maryland
State
Arts
Council
formed
a
jury
,
which
selected
Andrew
Leicester
to
develop
an
artwork
at the
Frostburg
site.
He
worked
closely
with a
committee
from
Frostburg
who
helped
him
research
the
history
and
culture
of the
area
before
he
created
the
memorial.
According
to the
artist
, the
memorial
was for the '
...losses
and
achievements
of
men
and
women
involved
in the
[mining]
industry
'
(pamphlet
produced
by
Leicester).
Leicester
spent
a
great
deal
of
time
talking
to
people
and
gathering
all
of the
historical
information
about
this
region
,
including
popular
myths
and
legends
,
before
he
developed
his
final
plans.
Project
Cost
:
$37,500.
