Project
Description
: This
work
commemorates
the
first
self-sustained
controlled
nuclear
reaction
on
December
2
,
1942.
It
is
situated
on the
spot
where
the
Manhattan
Project
team
invented
the
first
nuclear
reactor.
The
square
plaza
upon
which
the
sculpture
now
rests
was
designed
by the
architectural
firm
of
Skidmore
,
Owings
and
Merrill.
The
sculpture
is
12
feet
tall
, and has the
abstracted
shape
of a
mushroom
cloud.
According
to the
artist
, '
...the
whole
structure
was
meant
to have
contained
power
and
force
'

This
project
is
also
featured

Mrs.
Enrico
Fermi
,
widow
of the
Nobel
Laureate
nuclear
physicist
Enrico
Fermi
,
unveiled
the
memorial
on
December
2
,
1967
,
marking
the
25th
anniversary
of the
first
self-sustained
nuclear
reaction.
A
committee
,
established
by the
University
of
Chicago
President
George
Beadle
,
saw
a
three-inch
study
of
Nuclear
Energy
in
Moore's
studio
in
England
, and
commissioned
him to
produce
a
full-sized
version.
The
artist
visited
the
site
where
the
work
would be
located
, and
supervised
the
casting
of the
sculpture.
