Indians

land

funds
contributed
to the
construction
of the
Crazy
Horse
Memorial
have
come
from
private
sources
. The
artist
and his
family
have
rejected
offers
from the
federal
government
to
finance
this
project
.
Fees
charged
to
visitors
to the
site
and
revenues
from a
complex
of
museums
, a
restaurant
and
several
gift
shops
provide
much
of the
project's
funding
.
Project
Description
:
Constructed
as a
figurative
memorial
to the
Indian
chief
Crazy
Horse
, this
is
the
largest
figurative
sculptural
undertaking
in the
world
.
When
completed
it
will be
563
feet
high
and
641
feet
long
. '
My
fellow
chiefs
and
I
would
like
the
white
man
to
know
the
red
man
had
great
heroes
too
'

produced
by
Crazy
Horse
Memorial
Foundation)
. These
words
were
spoken
by
Henry
Standing
Bear
in his
invitation
to
Ziolkowski
to
carve
the
Crazy
Horse
sculpture
. The
figurative
sculpture
of
Crazy
Horse
is
being
carved
in the
round
.
Since
1949
,
nearly
eight
million
tons
of
rock
have been
removed
.
Compressor-powered
jackhammers
,
dynamite
and
bulldozers
have been
used
by the
artist
and his
family
to '
carve
' this
sculpture
out
of the
mountain
.
Mount
Rushmore
would
fit
in the
space
between
the
outstretched
arm
of
Crazy
Horse
and the
horse's
mane
.
Project
History
:
Ziolkowski
spent
37
years
planning
and
building
this
memorial
. He
began
his
work
at the
invitation
of the
Sioux
Chiefs
. The
artist
and his
family
lived
at the
site
, and
family
members
have
continued
his
work
. The
project
is
approximately
25%
completed
; there
is
no
set
target
date
for its
completion
.
