Notes
Owned
by the
family
of
Foster
Goldstrom
,
Oakland
, CA.
Sponsor/Developer
: The
San
Francisco
Arts
Commission
selected
Robert
Arneson
to
create
a
bust
to
honor
the
late
San
Francisco
Mayor
George
Moscone
.
Project
Description
: This
large-scale
bust
of
Moscone
rests
on a
pedestal
covered
with
drawings
which
relate
to
Mayor
Moscone's
life
and
violent
death
.
Because
of
controversy
surrounding
this
public
memorial
,
it
was
sold
by the
artist
to a
private
collector
.
Project
History
:
George
Moscone
was
slain
by
Dan
White
, a
former
city
supervisor
.
White's
defense
at his
trial
,
which
eventually
won
him a
very
light
sentence
, was that he had
consumed
huge
quantities
of
junk
food
which
caused
his
irrational
behavior
. The
City
of
San
Francisco
commissioned
Arneson
to
create
a
tribute
to
Moscone
,
which
the
artist
completed
in
1981
. The
sculpture
was
met
with
immediate
controversy
, and was
eventually
rejected
by the
San
Francisco
Arts
Commission
--
largely
because
of the
inscriptions
on the
sculpture's
base
.
Arneson
used
graffiti-like
drawings
and
sayings
which
described
the
life
and
tragic
death
of
Moscone
. The
base
refers
, for
example
, to the '
Twinkie
'
defense
testimony
. The
Arts
Commission
tried
to
negotiate
a
compromise
which
would
involve
changing
the
base
.
Arneson
rejected
this
compromise
,
arguing
that the
bust
and
pedestal
were
inseparable
and that to
change
the '
offending
'
base
would
destroy
the
work
.
Arneson
returned
the
$18,500
the
Arts
Commission
had
paid
him, and the
sculpture
was
temporarily
placed
in the
San
Francisco
Museum
of
Modern
Art
before
being
returned
to the
artist
. The
bust
was
eventually
sold
to
Foster
Goldstrom
, in
whose
collection
it
remains
today
.
