participated
in this
project
by
forming
a
steering
committee
which
supervised
all
aspects
of this
project
.
Project
Description
: This
memorial
to the
Jewish
people
who
lost
their
lives
in
German
concentration
camps
during
the
Second
World
War
consists
of a
number
of
figures
lying
in a
group
, and
one
standing
with
outstretched
hands
grasping
a
barbed-wire
fence
. The
Holocaust
Memorial
is
located
on a
hillside
facing
San
Francisco
Bay
. The
sculpture
is
bordered
on
three
sides
by a
cement
retaining
wall
,
which
is
approximately
ten
feet
tall
and
encloses
an
area
of
about
600
square
feet
. The
open
end
of the
enclosure
faces
the
view
.
Two
fence
posts
, with
barbed
wire
stretched
between
them,
partially
blocks
the
entrance
to the '
cell
'. A
single
figure
is
standing
at the
fence
. His
outstretched
hand
is
holding
onto the
barbed-wire
fencing
.
Behind
him in the
middle
of the
enclosure
are the
fallen
victims
of the
concentration
camp
. The
figures
and
fence
elements
are
painted
a
stark
white
. At
night
a
single
harsh
floodlight
illuminates
the
figures
.
Project
History
:
Rhoda
Goldman
was
appointed
by
Mayor
Dianne
Feinstein
to
organize
a
memorial
to the
six
million
Jews
who
died
in
German
concentration
camps
during
World
War
II
. A
number
of
prominent
artists
--
including
Henry
Moore
,
Joan
Miro
,
Isamu
Noguchi
,
Robert
Graham
and
others
--
were
asked
to
contribute
proposals
for the
memorial
. The
committee
selected
the
proposal
by
George
Segal
and the
work
was
installed
in
1984
.
Controversy
immediately
ensued
over
the
procedure
used
for
selecting
the
artist
and the
choice
of the
site
.
Opponents
from
surrounding
neighborhoods
questioned
the
apparent
'
fait
accompli
' of the
decision
to
locate
the
project
at
Lincoln
Park
.
Others
were
critical
of the
artist's
qualifications
to
do
a
work
of
such
seriousness
,
when
his
reputation
was
more
connected
with
often
playful
and
ordinary
themes
.
Most
people
considered
the
final
work
to be a
highly
emotional
and
powerful
statement
about
the
Holocaust
.
Some
critics
argued
that a
more
appropriate
approach
might
have been to '
memorialize
' the
men
,
women
and
children
who
died
,
rather
than to '
remember
' the
explicit
details
of their
death
.
