Project
Description
: The
project
was
conceived
as a '
sculpture
park
'
within
a '
sculpture
park.
' A
paddlewheel
, a
crucible
, The
Golden
Triangle
and
Penn's
Woods
represent
the
varied
elements
that have
contributed
to
Pittsburgh's
growth
.
Project
History
: In an
agreement
between
the
City
of
Pittsburgh
and the
Mellon
Stewart
Company
, a
2.7-acre
waterfront
park
was
developed
on the
north
shore
of the
Allegheny
River
. The
United
States
Department
of the
Interior
, The
Pennsylvania
Department
of
Community
Affairs
and the
City
of
Pittsburgh
supported
the
development
of the
park
.
Landscape
architect
R
.
Jackson
Sey
,
Jr.
, of the
firm
Jackson
Sey
and
Associates
,
designed
the
park
and
suggested
the
possibility
of
creating
an
urban
sculpture
park
.
Approval
for this
idea
was
obtained
, and
Alice
Snyder
, an
art
consultant
, was
retained
in
1981
to
participate
in the
selection
of
artists
for the
sculpture
park
. She was also
asked
to
participate
in the
fundraising
requirements
.
Four
artists
were
invited
to
submit
proposals
,
including
Ned
Smyth
and
George
Sugarman
.
Sugarman
visited
the
park
, and
together
with
Jackson
Sey
determined
the
site
for his
sculpture
. The
City
Arts
Commission
approved
Sugarman's
proposal
and the
Mayor
gave
his
blessing
to the
project
.
All
of the
artworks
at the
Allegheny
Landing
Park
were
acquired
by the
Museum
of
Art
and the
Carnegie
Institute
, for
curatorial
and
historic
purposes
, and were
placed
on
permanent
loan
to the
City
of
Pittsburgh
. A
public
arts
fund
was
established
to
maintain
the
sculptures
over
time
.
