Sponsor/Developer: Portland Metropolitan Arts Percent for Art Program Project Description: Located on the new municipal building in Portland, this monumental sculpture represents a figure of a crouching woman with a trident, symbolizing the spirit of Portland. Portlandia is a contemporary figurative statue of monumental scale. It rests in a niche above the Fifth Avenue entrance to the new Portland Building designed by architect Michael Graves. The sculpture complements the design objectives of the architect, who often uses historic or anthropological symbols in his designs. Portlandia commemorates the spirit of Portland. It is the second largest sculpture, after the Statue of Liberty, to be constructed using the technique of hammered copper on steel. Project History: The Portland Metropolitan Arts Commission formed a selection committee, consisting of an Arts Commission staff person, two artists, and one citizen. Over 200 submissions were received for the commission; five finalists were asked to prepare final drawings. Raymond Kaskey was selected in 1982, and soon began the construction of Portlandia in his Washington, D.C. studio. It was completed and transported to Portland in 1985, and placed at its present site.
