Located
on the
new
municipal
building
in
Portland
, this
monumental
sculpture
represents
a
figure
of a
crouching
woman
with a
trident
,
symbolizing
the
spirit
of
Portland
.
Portlandia
is
a
contemporary
figurative
statue
of
monumental
scale
.
It
rests
in a
niche
above
the
Fifth
Avenue
entrance
to the
new
Portland
Building
designed
by
architect
Michael
Graves
. The
sculpture
complements
the
design
objectives
of the
architect
,
who
often
uses
historic
or
anthropological
symbols
in his
designs
.
Portlandia
commemorates
the
spirit
of
Portland
.
It
is
the
second
largest
sculpture
,
after
the
Statue
of
Liberty
, to be
constructed
using
the
technique
of
hammered
copper
on
steel
.
Project
History
: The
Portland
Metropolitan
Arts
Commission
formed
a
selection
committee
,
consisting
of an
Arts
Commission
staff
person
,
two
artists
, and
one
citizen
.
Over
200
submissions
were
received
for the
commission
;
five
finalists
were
asked
to
prepare
final
drawings
.
Raymond
Kaskey
was
selected
in
1982
, and
soon
began
the
construction
of
Portlandia
in his
Washington
,
D.C
.
studio
.
It
was
completed
and
transported
to
Portland
in
1985
, and
placed
at its
present
site
.
