citizens

build
a
memorial
.
Project
Description
: This
memorial
to
civic
leader
Alden
Weber
is
also a
public
gathering
place
, with
integral
sidewalks
,
benches
,
planter
and a
water
feature
.
Cement
pathways
leading
to the
work
were
designed
as
barrier-free
access
ramps
. The
work
is
approximately
20
feet
square
, and
is
located
in a
park-like
setting
surrounded
by
trees
and
lawn
. Its
site-specific
quality
reflects
a
consideration
for the
topography
of the
park
, the
life
of
Alden
Weber
, and the
functional
requirements
for a
place
of
peace
and
contemplation
.
Project
History
: The
project
was
commissioned
in
1980
as a
memorial
to
Alden
Weber
. The
artist
developed
a
model
and the
local
community
approved
it
.
Alden
Weber
was a
well-respected
member
of the
community
. He was a
banker
by
profession
, but also had a
degree
in
philosophy
. He had
polio
as a
child
and
required
the
use
of a
wheelchair
.
