came
from
contributions
made

by
Frederick
Hart
was
supported
principally
by a
grant
from
Ross
Perot
.
Project
Description
: The
contemporary
memorials
to
Vietnam
Veterans
by
Lin
and
Hart
are a
contrast
in
style
and
approach
.
Lin's
work
consists
of
two
240-foot-long
black
marble
walls
that
taper
to
points
,
radiating
from a
ten-foot-tall
below-grade
intersection
.
One
wall
points
toward
the
Lincoln
Memorial
and the
other
toward
the
Washington
Monument
.
Inscribed
in the
two
walls
are the
57,692
names
of the
war
dead
.
Hart's
work
consists
of a
realistic
bronze
sculpture
of
three
infantrymen
,
approximately
9
feet
tall
.
Project
History
:
Jan
Scruggs
, an
infantry
corporal
in the
Vietnam
War
,
participated
in a
veterans
group
in
Washington
,
D.C
.
which
developed
the
idea
for a
memorial
to the
over
57,000
Americans
who
died
in the
war
.
Jan
Scruggs
was
severely
wounded
in
Vietnam
.
Through
his
leadership
in
creating
a
fundraising
program
and with
support
from
Senator
Charles
Mathias
of
Maryland
,
both
money
and a
site
were
acquired
for the
memorial
.
Scruggs
formed
the
Vietnam
Veterans
Memorial
Committee
,
which
raised
enough
money
through
small
contributions
to
defray
the
cost
of
building
the
memorial
.
Senator
Mathias
was
instrumental
in
obtaining
permission
to
use
Constitution
Gardens
as the
memorial
site
. A
national
competition
to
select
a
design
for the
memorial
was
initiated
and a
panel
of
eight
men
was
selected
to
jury
the
competition
. The
competition
opened
in
1980
, to
anyone
who
wished
to
submit
plans
, but there were
three
basic
requirements
: the
design
had to have the
names
of
all
of the
soldiers
who
died
in the
war
;
it
had to be
reflective
and
contemplative
in
nature
; and
it
could
not
make
political
statements
.
More
than
1400
entries
were
submitted
. In a
five-day
period
in
May
of
1981
, the
panel
selected
the
work
of
Maya
Ying
Ling
, a
22-year-old
architecture
student
at
Yale
University
.
Controversy
quickly
developed
, as the
Vietnam
Veteran
Memorial
Committee
members
were
sharply
divided
over
the
selected
project
.
Tom
Cathart
, a
strong
opponent
of the
design
and
one
of the
early
organizers
,
raised
seed
money
to
create
another
,
more
figurative
sculpture
. A
$165,000
contribution
from
Texas
millionaire
Ross
Perot
launched
a
counterattack
on
Lin's
design
.
Ross's
political
clout
with
Congress
eventually
reopened
the
design
competition
;
through
the
support
of
27
Republican
Congressmen
,
President
Reagan
intervened
, and a
compromise
soon
resulted
. The
opposition
failed
to
throw
out
the
initial
design
, but they were
able
to
obtain
approval
for a
figurative
sculpture
to be
located
at the
same
site
. The
opposition
group
,
led
by
Cathart
,
opposed
the
design
by
Maya
Ying
Lin
for
three
basic
reasons
.
First
, they
believed
that
it
presented
a
clear
political
statement
,
represented
by the
black
color
.
Second
, the
names
on the
memorial
were
placed
in the
order
of their
death
and not in
random
or
alphabetical
order
,
suggesting
the
superior
importance
of the
individual
over
the
greater
purpose
for
which
they
gave
their
lives
.
Third
, the
memorial
would be
shaped
like
a '
V
',
which
was a
familiar
anti-war
symbol
made
with the
fingers
.
Frederick
Hart
was
selected
to
design
an
eight-foot-high
bronze
statue
of
three
infantrymen
,
located
next
to a
50-foot
flag
pole
. A
directory
was also
created
so
that
visitors
could
locate
a
soldier's
name
on the
memorial
by
Maya
Ying
Lin
