Project
Description
: This
monumental
figurative
bronze
statue
of a
dazed
soldier
was
created
in
memory
of
all
surviving
soldiers.
The
soldier
carries
a
heavy
load
of
weapons
and
ammunition
in
outstretched
arms
, with a
perplexed
or
mystified
expression
on his
face.
The
figure
faces
a
grove
of
trees
and
plantings
, with his
back
toward
the
position
from
which
visitors
would
first
view
it.
The
freestanding
sculpture
stands
approximately
18
feet
tall
and
weighs
2500
pounds.
Project
History
: The
Veteran
Resource
Center
of the
University
of
Minnesota
originated
the
idea
for this
memorial.
However
,
federal
funding
which
supported
their
organization
disappeared
, and the
memorial
plans
were
delayed
until
the
Veterans
of
Foreign
Wars
(V.F.W.)
resumed
the
project
several
years
later.
The
V.F.W.
raised
money
from a
number
of
organizations.
Artist
Roger
Brodin
was
recommended
by
representatives
from the
Veteran
Resource
Center.
Brodin
also
suggested
the
name
for the
memorial.
The
original
site
for the
memorial
was to be at the
University
of
Minnesota
, but
because
of the
elimination
of the
Veteran
Resource
Center
it
was
sited
at the
Minnesota
Capitol
Campus
next
to the
Veterans
Affairs
Building.
[Note
that the
vendor
Art
On
File
states
this
sculpture
is
approximately
18
feet
high
,
while
the
Smithsonian
Institution
Research
Information
System
(SIRIS)
gives
the
height
as
12
feet.
