of the
state
of
Arizona
.
Project
Description
:
Working
with a
510,000-year-old
volcanic
cinder
cone
, the
artist
is
creating
an
artwork
which
will
serve
as a
kind
of
planetarium
, from
which
visitors
can
observe
celestial
events
and the
patterns
of
light
on the
crater
created
by the
sun
,
moon
,
stars
and
clouds
.
Photographs
provided
by the
artist

According
to the
project
sponsors
,
Turrell's
Roden
Crater
Project
, '
...will
deal
with the
physical
,
tactile
presence
of
light
inhabiting
space...
' The
surface
of this
600-foot-tall
crater
will not be
altered
from the
exterior
. The
artist
is
presently
creating
a
12-foot
diameter
tunnel
,
1035
feet
long
sloping
gently
up
from the
volcano's
exterior
to an
opening
at the
volcano's
top
. The
orientation
of the
tunnel
will
allow
the
moon
to
fall
into
exact
alignment
with
it
every
18.6
years
,
casting
moonlight
through
its
full
extent
and
producing
a
moon
image
on a
wall
at the
lower
end
.
Similar
imaging
of the
sun
during
the
summer
solstice
will
occur
. The
sensation
of
walking
up
into the
sky
will be
produced
as the
visitor
walks
through
the
tunnel
. The
dome
area
will be
sculpted
to the
shape
of a
parabolic
dish
to '
...support
and
make
malleable
the
perception
of
celestial
vaulting
'.
Visitors
will be
able
to
move
along
the
volcano's
crater
to the
rim
,
where
the
Painted
Desert
and the
geological
history
of the
planet
is
evident
throughout
the
landscape
below
. The
curvature
of the
planet
, the
sky
dome
above
, and the
immense
parabolic
curve
of the
volcano's
dish
will
provide
the
visitor
with a
sense
of the
earth's
enormous
scale
.
