Project
Description
:
Located
on a
remote
four-acre
site
, this
work
consists
of a
geometrically-shaped
10-foot-deep
pit
,
reinforced
by
wooden
planks
and
containing
a
latticework
hub
of
wooden
beams
and
planks
.
Radiating
from the
pit
are
rows
of
wooden
posts
,
which
fan
out
into the
adjacent
field
in a
pattern
which
appears
to
make
the
artwork
spin
. This
project
is
also
included
in
[Art
On
File's]
collection
,
Chicago
: A
Survey
of
Contemporary
Public
Art
, with the
addition
here of
aerial
views
.
Field
Rotation
is
a
site-specific
work
,
located
on a
gradually
sloping
farmland
site
near
the
central
campus
building
of
Governor
State
University
.
Miss
created
a
four-sided
star-shaped
,
ten-foot
deep
pit
,
reinforced
with
wooden
planks
and
containing
a
latticework
hub
of
wooden
planks
and
beams
. At the
center
of the
pit
is
a
well
with a
metal
structure
protruding
from
it
.
Radiating
from the
pit
are
rows
of
wooden
posts
which
fan
out
into the
adjacent
field
in a
pattern
which
makes
the
artwork
appear
to
spin
like
a
pinwheel
. The
posts
are
all
cut
to the
same
grade
. The
work
is
bordered
on
two
sides
by an
Osage
Orange
hedgerow
,
planted
during
the
time
the
site
was
used
as a
farm
. The
hedgerow
serves
as
both
a
boundary
line
and
windbreak
. This
work
accentuates
the
openness
of the
site
.
Visitors
are
encouraged
to
directly
participate
with
it
, by
means
of
several
ladders
with
which
to
climb
into the
pit
. Of the
three
metal
towers
constructed
of
black
pipe
,
one
protrudes
from the
well
, the
second
is
inside
the
pit
, and the
third
is
located
on the
edge
of the
pit
.

: This
work
is
part
of
Governor
State
University's
permanent
collection
.
Louis
Manilow
provided
the
funding
for this
project
, and has
supported
and
selected
other
major
sculptural
works
at
Governor
State
University
.
