Project
Description
: The
work
incorporates
a
meandering
path
of
triangular
brick
pavers
,
winding
up
and
over
a
gentle
contour
of
land
.
Concentrated
around
the
crest
of the
hill
is
a
grove
of
linear
steel
towers
which
support
wind-activated
organ
pipes
.
Kite-like
benches
are
located
in this
area
,
allowing
the
walker
to
stop
and
contemplate
the
surrounding
view
and
listen
. The
solitude
of the
site
, and the
harmonic
sounds
created
by the
organ
pipes
on a
windy
day
,
offer
visitors
an
ethereal
experience
.
Project
History
:
During
the
Spring
of
1981
,
NOAA
established
funding
to
begin
a
process
which
involved
the
artists
Martin
Puryear
,
Scott
Burton
,
Siah
Armajani
,
George
Trakas
and
Doug
Hollis
. The
design
team
was
headed
by the
architectural
firm
of The
NBBJ
Group
, with
representation
from the
public
and
private
sectors
. Their
purpose
was to
develop
an
integrated
plan
for the
entire
114-acre
site
--
a
plan
which
would
take
into
account
the
geography
of the
site
and how
people
would
use
it
. The
result
was a
series
of
separate
experiential
works
emphasizing
the
relationship
between
man
and his
natural
environment
.
Each
project
takes
its
cue
from the
contours
of the
land
, the
water
and the
play
of the
wind
.
Visitors
to the
site
can
follow
an '

path
along
the
shoreline
connecting
the
various
works
