Project
Description
: This
artwork
is
composed
of
28,000
linear
feet
of
white
extruded
aluminum
arranged
in a
geometrical
pattern.
The
mural
rearranges
the
light
reflected
from
nearby
buildings
into
various
patterns.
Sol
Levitt's
mural
is
located
in a
small
,
relatively
dark
plaza
facing
the
multi-storied
Dirksen
Federal
Building.
Simple
lines
,
basic
colors
and
geometric
shapes
are the
elements
of
Levitt's
work.
This
mural
consists
of
interlocking
aluminum
'
strips
'
forming
different
line
patterns
in
each
of the
four
quadrants
of the
mural.
The
top
two
quadrants
contain
opposing
diagonal
patterns
; the
third
quadrant
has
vertical
lines
, and the
fourth
horizontal.
Sunlight
reflecting
from the
windows
of the
Dirksen
Federal
Building
create
a
changing
array
of
patterns
on the
mural
which
in
turn
are
reflected
on the
plaza
below.
According
to the
artist
, '
...its
just
straight
lines
in
four
directions.
Then, the
sun
does
the
drawing
,
making
lines
as
it
provides
changing
shading
throughout
the
day.
