Project
Description
: This
2/3-acre
artist-designed
park
,
located
between
two
busy
arterials
,
serves
as the
southern
entry
to
Rosslyn
, and
includes
five
large
gunite
spheres
or '
dark
stars
', an
earth
berm
with
tunnels
, a
pond
,
several
towers
,
lawn
and
pathways
. This
project
was a
design
solution
to a
trash-strewn
easement
.
Nancy
Holt
took
charge
of the
2/3-acre
site
and
created
an
integrated
work
consisting
of
earthen
forms
,
five
large
gunite
spheres
or
Dark
Stars
,
ponds
,
poles
,
walkways
and
seating
areas
. The
lawn
captures
the
natural
elements
of the
site
and the
relationship
of the
sky
,
sun
and
earth
. A
unique
aspect
of this
artwork
is
the
simulated
shadow
patterns
of the
spheres
and
poles
on the
traffic
island
. The
shadow
patterns
were
inlaid
in
asphalt
, and
line
up
with the
real
shadows
on the
exact
day
and
time
when
William
Henry
Ross
acquired
the
land
that
became
Rosslyn
.
Dark
Star
Park
serves
as a
southern
entrance
to
Rosslyn
. A
modern
high
rise
office
building
overlooks
the
park
to the
north
.
Project
History
:
Dark
Star
Park
is
the
result
of an
alliance
among
local
and
federal
agencies
and the
private
sector
.
Planning
began
in
1977
,
when
the
site
developer
,
Theodore
Gould
,
granted
an
easement
to
Arlington
County
as
part
of a
development
plan
to
erect
several
office
buildings
. The
county
contacted
the
National
Endowment
for the
Arts
and
other
private
financial
sources
, to
help
in
supporting
an
artwork
for the
area
.
Nancy
Holt
was
selected
by a
panel
of
local
and
national
art
experts
,
who
reviewed
the
work
of
forty
artists
before
making
their
final
selection
. She was
involved
in the
beginning
design
phase
and
became
both
artist
and
principal
designer
of the
park
. Her
expanded
role
was
met
with
some
initial
hesitation
on the
part
of the
building
developers
.
However
,
meetings
with
Kaempfer
,
Parker
,
Jeffries
and
landscape
architect
Peter
Walker
resolved
any
questions
about
Holt's
abilities
, and the
project
was
accepted
.
Kaempfer
even
increased
the
park
budget
by
$50,000
because
of his
enthusiasm
for the
plan
. The
project
took
five
years
to
complete
.
Project
cost
:
$250,000
.
