Project
Description
: This
large
scale
artwork
consists
of
three
wind
vanes
,
shaped
like
semi-circular
scoops
,
which
are
connected
to a
central
tower
. The
wind
vanes
spin
when
the
wind
blows
.
Suspended
from
each
wind
vane
is
a
small
pyramid
object
which
points
toward
the
ground
. The
wind
vanes
are
painted
red
and the
tower
is
black
.

Project
History
:
Between
1979
and
1985
, the
Cambridge
Arts
Council
and the
United
States
Department
of
Transportation
cooperated
on a
program
to
fund
permanent
artworks
in the
new
Red
Line
Northwest
Extension
project
. This
federally-funded
program
became
known
as '
Art
on the
Line
', and
is
the
first
program
in the
country
to
incorporate
works
of
art
into a
mass
transit
development
program
.
It
has
since
become
a
model
for
other
cities
throughout
the
country
which
are
developing
mass
transit
programs
. The
Cambridge
Arts
Council
developed
a
selection
process
which
involved
the
creation
of
committees
for
each
station
.
650
artists
submitted
slides
.
Lengthy
discussions
involving
community
representatives
,
art
experts
and
safety
and
maintenance
engineers
resulted
in the
final
selection
of
artists
and
projects
. The
estimated
value
of the
entire
artwork
collection
is
$1.5
million
.
