Project
Description
: This
work
,
made
of
bronze
,
copper
and
stainless
steel
,
portrays
outer
space
imagery
in the
form
of
two
long
conical
shapes
which
encompass
a
time
capsule
. The
work
consists
of
outer
space
imagery
, a
time
capsule
, and
references
to
technology
and
biology
. The
work
is
located
on a
corner
plaza
. A
circle
and a
superimposed
triangle
are
delineated
by
color
tones
of
concrete
. These
shapes
form
the
base
for
several
metallic
structures
.
One
structure
resembles
a
satellite
,
another
a
large
spring
or
helix
, and the
third
a
bronze
axle
with
wheels
. A
shadow
pattern
or
elliptical
form
is
also
superimposed
on the
base
. The
structures
resemble
a '
Jules
Vern
'
futuristic
contraption
that
combines
artifacts
of
machinery
from the
past
with
futuristic
symbols
suggesting
space
travel
.
Project
History
: This
project
was
funded
through
private
contributions
. The
developer
for the
site
where
the
artwork
is
located
had
used
more
square
feet
of
space
for his
project
than was
permitted
by the
city
. The
city
required
the
developer
to
repay
the
city
in the
form
of an
artwork
for the
site
. The
Los
Angeles
Community
Redevelopment
agency
handled
the
selection
process
.
